Introduction
If you walk around in China, you might notice something interesting.
Even people in their early twenties often carry a vacuum insulated tumbler everywhere they go.
And if you open the lid, there’s a good chance you’ll see goji berries floating inside.
There’s actually a running joke among young people in China:
“We may still stay up late, but at least we drink hot water.”
Somehow, holding a warm tumbler makes us feel like we’re taking care of ourselves.
As if one cup of hot, slightly mysterious herbal water could magically add a few years to our lives.
Of course, that’s probably not scientifically proven — but it definitely makes us feel healthier.
Today I’d love to share five simple drinks that many Chinese people like to prepare in their tumblers.
They’re easy to make, comforting to sip throughout the day, and each one carries a little bit of everyday Chinese wellness culture.
1. Goji Berry & Red Date Tea
If there’s one drink that perfectly represents Chinese “health culture,” this might be it.
Goji berries and red dates are two ingredients you’ll find in countless traditional drinks and soups.
Both are naturally sweet, so even without sugar, the tea has a light, pleasant flavor.
Many people believe this drink helps with energy and general well-being.
And honestly, it’s also just incredibly simple.
How to make it
- A small handful of goji berries
- 2–3 dried red dates
- Hot water
Put everything into your tumbler and let it steep for a few minutes.
Then just refill with hot water throughout the day.

2. Homemade Lemon Electrolyte Drink
During the pandemic years, many people in China had to stay at home for long periods of time.
And when someone in the family caught a cold or had a sore throat, a lot of us started experimenting with homemade electrolyte drinks.
The recipe was surprisingly simple.
A slice of lemon, a tiny pinch of salt, a little bit of honey, and warm water.
People would lightly mash the lemon in the tumbler to release more juice.
The result was a slightly salty, slightly sweet drink that felt incredibly soothing on the throat.
Of course, everyone adjusted the honey depending on their “sugar control goals.”
Even while making a comfort drink, we were still thinking about staying healthy.

3. Chrysanthemum & Cassia Seed Tea
(also known as the “stay-up-late survival tea”)
Let’s be honest — working culture in many Chinese cities can be pretty intense.
Long hours, late nights, and too much screen time are very common.
So it’s no surprise that people constantly search for “liver-protecting” or eye-soothing herbal teas.
One popular combination is chrysanthemum and cassia seeds.
I’ve personally tried this one many times.
When you’re working late at night, refilling your tumbler again and again somehow creates the comforting illusion that you’re balancing out all the unhealthy habits.
It’s basically the drink version of saying:
“I know I’m staying up too late… but at least I’m trying.”

4. Hawthorn, Aged Tangerine Peel & Lotus Leaf Tea
(a classic “weight management” drink)
If you search online in China for “what tea helps with weight management,” this combination will appear almost immediately.
Hawthorn berries, aged tangerine peel (chenpi), and lotus leaf are often brewed together.
The flavor is slightly sour, a little herbal, and surprisingly refreshing.
Many people drink it after heavy meals.
Of course, everyone also knows the real secret to staying healthy:
eat well and stay active.
But having a comforting tumbler drink nearby definitely doesn’t hurt.

5. Red Bean & Coix Seed Drink
This one connects to a concept in traditional Chinese wellness called “dampness.”
In traditional Chinese medicine, “dampness” refers to an internal imbalance that can make people feel sluggish, heavy, or tired.
Red beans and coix seeds are commonly used ingredients that are believed to help balance this condition.
Many people cook them lightly and then keep the warm drink in a tumbler to sip during the day.
Even if you don’t follow traditional medicine theories, it’s still a warm, nourishing drink with a mild nutty flavor.
